You may remember using Retin-A (Tretinoin) cream for acne when you were younger (or if you’re like some of us, you may be still using it!). Now, it’s as popular as ever since recent studies have shown that retinoids (the family of creams that include Tretinoin, Differin (Adapalene), Tazarotene (Tazorac) and over the counter retinols) are also effective for anti-aging purposes. Keep reading to discover all of the benefits that retinoids have to offer—you may learn some surprising facts!
Improve skin texture and reduce dark spots. Retinoids speed up skin cell turnover, which begins to slow down as we age.
Reduce blackheads and minimize pores. Prescription strength retinoids increase cell turnover, causing the pores to unclog and appear smaller.
Tightening. Not only do retinoids aid in decreasing the amount of collagen breakdown from sun exposure by preventing the rise of an enzyme called collagenase, but they also help stimulate the production of new collagen (which helps prevent fine lines and wrinkles!).
Acne. Retinol packs a powerful punch when it comes to fighting acne and the shadowy scars it leaves behind. Regular use helps clear up your complexion by pulling dead skin cells out of pores, making them appear smaller. It’s also an anti-inflammatory, which helps reduce redness.
Wart removal. You heard it—put a little on an unwanted wart and watch the bump begin to disappear. Retinoids will disrupt the wart’s skin cell growth, eventually causing it to go away for good.
Wrinkles & Age Spots. Retinol helps improve sun-damaged skin by increasing collagen production.
Retinoids are safe to use for all skin types, but can be irritating at first. Ask Dr. Lee about proper usage to minimize irritation and dryness. REN also sells over-the-counter retinols if you’d like to try a gentler version.
