What to Know Before Getting Lip Filler

It's completely normal to be nervous before your first appointment, especially when you don't know what to expect. Here's exactly what happens, and how to prepare.

Most of the nerves around a first filler appointment come from the unknowns. What actually happens in the chair, how you should prepare, when the swelling settles, whether the results will look like you. So let's take the mystery out of it. Here's a walkthrough of the whole experience, from the moment you sit down to the moment your final results appear.

During Your Appointment

A walkthrough, start to finish

First, one small but important request: please arrive without makeup, lipstick, or lip gloss. We want to assess your lips' true anatomy, and the area surrounding the lip matters just as much. One of the keys to a natural-looking lip is making sure it's supported by the surrounding tissue.

We take your photos next, so you have true before and afters. Your provider answers any questions, explains the procedure, and yes, inspiration pictures are welcome. Then topical numbing is applied for about 20 minutes, and a very small needle is used to place the hyaluronic acid gel filler in the lips.

What to Expect After

Swelling, bruising, and honesty about both

Bruising and swelling are always person-dependent. While we do our best to avoid excess tissue trauma, there's truly no way to predict how much you will bruise. I get asked this all the time.

And one thing to know going in: as soon as we're done injecting, your lips will be swollen. These are not your final results.

Your best, most natural results appear at four weeks, once the filler has integrated into the tissue.

The Timeline

When you'll see your final results

The majority of swelling and bruising resolves within two weeks, which is when you'll check in with your provider to evaluate how your tissue responded. But truly, your best, most natural results appear at four weeks, once the filler has had time to fully integrate.
